Helen Obineme

My name is Nqozi Helen Obineme, but I usually go by Helen. I am from Baltimore, Maryland and I graduated this May from Loyola University Maryland with a Bachelor’s in Chemistry. I decided to join CCSC for a year because volunteering for a year has always been something I wanted to do since my undergraduate studies. What drew me to this program were the four pillars, especially spirituality and social justice. I have been volunteering since I was little but it has mainly been charity and not social justice. I hope to understand what it means to work for social justice and to be an advocate for something I really believe in.

I am an Intake and Hotline Counselor at Catholic Charities Victim Services, which helps victims of Domestic Violence and those struggling to find financial resources. Working at Victim Services is helping me have a greater understanding of what Domestic Violence victims go through and what forms of Domestic Violence exists. At Victim Services, we are also helping to spread the awareness of Domestic Violence to others by giving trainings to couples, workers, the police department, and adolescent children so that there can one day be a stop to the abuse towards women. I am really enjoying my work here so far. I hope to gain experience this year that can help me throughout my future after the CCSC.
