When I first heard about the technology fast in the first month and a half, the program threw a big challenge at me. Normally, I’m always using some sort of technology and everyone in my non-CCSC support system knows that. I had to deal with some questions like, “How are you going to survive this time in the program and how am I going to survive without texting you?” The communication between my support system and me changed from texting and emailing to talking on the phone longer and having better conversations in person. I was also faced with the question: “What do you do since you don’t have technology at your fingertips all the time?”
My answer was simple: we find things to do that don’t incorporate it. This reply threw the individual off.
By unplugging for six weeks, I was able to plug into something way more important - a new layer of a support system that will be there for me, no questions asked, as well as a better connection with my pre-CCSC circle. There were times when it was hard, but I kept going and in the end it was so worth it. Now I feel that I am more connected to the other volunteers, especially the three others that I’m living with, as well as my non-CCSC community. This outcome made what seemed like a very long six weeks at the beginning and at the end (surprisingly not in the middle) worth it.
What else resulted from the techno-fast? Ten very important life lessons were presented and reintroduced to me: when you’re scared, go for it anyway; you’ll appreciate it later; do it if you doubt the worst may not be that bad; do something different and have fun doing it; expect the unexpected, you never know what will happen; and look at life from a different angle. Was I fully successful with the techno-fast? There were times I slipped with it but in the end the lessons learned made the six weeks successful.
