Volunteer Reflections
Reflections By: LaWanna
I came to Buffalo via the CCSC because God called me here, although at the time I didn't know why. I thought that the tenets of the program - spirituality, community, social justice, and simplicity - were noble. I was going to do these great things and change everything, you know, be a revolutionary.
However, in this short time I have come to discover that God called me here to change me. Seeing one's self through the eyes of another person - in my case three people - is not the prettiest sight. I have flaws that get in the way of not only my personal growth, but also my spiritual growth in this walk with God. I thought that the flaws were bad things, but someone told me yesterday that the flaws are the things that make me human. They draw me even closer to God in His infinite awesomeness.
The lessons are plenty. I have the opportunity to learn from myself and my experiences as well as the people around me. I volunteer as a computer and 5th grade math teacher at Catholic Central School. It seems that quite a few people have given up on this school and forgotten about it. But there is so much energy, so much knowledge, such a great hunger for learning here! The children are wonderful and they challenge me to be the best teacher that I can for them- the best teacher that I know how to be. They help me rediscover the joy and thirst that I had for learning when I was in grade school, when I was immersed in two or three different books at a time just because I liked the images the words inspired.
This program is great. It is designed to feed every part of the person - spiritual, social, emotional, and mental. Thanks to Amy and the Buffalo Diocese.
