Simplicity
Embracing simplicity allows us to value relationships over things. When our lives are free of excess activity and material possessions, we are less distracted; our time and energy can now be focused on the voice of God, our true selves, and the voices of our brothers and sisters. Simple living brings clarity to our humanity and the glory of Creation. Our lifestyle choices affect how we treat others, and the way others may live.
Practically speaking, CCSC Volunteers are asked to commit to the following actions, as best they can, during their year of service:
- Live on the common stipend received. A Volunteer will not accept funds from family, friends, second jobs or any other source to supplement their stipend.
- Seek simplicity in use of time, energy and resources, thereby avoiding distractions, busyness, materialism, and consumption. Volunteers will spend more time being, instead of doing and acquiring. Volunteers are asked to limit use of all electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, personal computers, televisions, etc.), especially for the first two months. All volunteers are expected to fast from cell phone use (land lines are available) for the first month, in order to create discussion around Necessity vs. Luxury.
- Socialize and recreate in ways that enhance relationships with others and with Creation, examining their use of TV, alcohol, and other products valued by our possession-focused culture that may impede this practice.
